About This Blog

This blog features: neighborhood restaurants, nearby restaurants, downtown restaurants, Casa View Shopping Center, nearby shopping, Downtown shops.

I will first list places and my connections with them. For the spirit of completeness, I will then list other places, known to me but not visited. I choose not to list the unknown.

I like the section entitled Places I Wish I Had Visited.

My focus is places and locations which existed from 1953, when I moved to Dallas, until 1965, when I graduated from high school. This list will continue with my college years, until I turned 21. I left Dallas in 1969 and, as I did not return except to visit my parents until 1973, my memory of East Dallas ends at that time.

Some categories were easy to separate – restaurants and shopping. Some experiences are not so easy to categorize, but are still meaningful. They may be all lumped in together, and then teased out as other connections are made.

Music wise, we may have thought we were born of the “wrong generation.” I always thought the older generation (i.e. 3 to 4 years older than me) had a richer and deeper experience.

But we, the beginning of the Baby Boomer generation, had it best – stable family life, rising expectations for the middle class and parents who wanted to give so much to their children, which most did not have in their childhood. We were left to play and roam outdoors to make our own fun. We had the best toys and the best music.

And yet we lived in tumultuous times – the Cold War, Civil Rights, Integration and the Kennedy Assassination through the killings of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King.

Hopefully we came out as loving, caring, sharing adults whose experiences made us better people and gave us the ability to show appreciation and gratitude for the neighborhood and experiences which enriched us and our loved ones.

Later Places in Dallas - Duly Noted

Too late to enjoy:

Little Gas - 1916 Greenville.  8261-4910

Joe Miller's - 3531 McKinney.  521-2261.  I want to read my favorite journalists, not hang out with them.  Never went.

Daddy's Money - 5500 Greenville.  763-8686

Marriano's - 5500 Greenville (Old Town). 691-3888

Adair's - 3903 Cedar Springs.  526-9379.  Was the last "straight" bar on Cedar Springs.  I don't know if they moved all those wet napkins stuck to the ceiling to their new location on Commerce in Deep Ellum.

Highland Park Cafeteria - 4611 Cole.  526-3801

S & D Oyster Co. - 2701 McKinney.  823-6350

Keller's Drive In - 6537 E. Northwest Highway.  368-1209.  Never went, but went to the Keller's on Lemmon for greasy hamburgers and fries.

Celebration - 4503 Lover's Lane.  351-5681

Black Eyed Pea - 3857 Cedar Springs.  521-4580

Stoneleigh P - 2926 Maple.  741-0824

Kirby's Steak House - 3715 Greenville.  823-7296

Vehon's Half Shall - 4844 Greenville.  368-8911.  4844 Greenville.  Stories the walls could tell about this place.  Never went.

The Grape - 2800 Greenville.  823-0133

Chili's - 7567 Greenville.  361-4371

The Bronx - 3835 Cedar Springs.  521-5821

Greenville Ave Country Club - 3619 Greenville.  826-5650

Mecca Cafe - 10422 Harry Hines.  352-0051

Kirby's Sausage House - 6601 Snider Plaza.  363-2231

San Francisco Rose - 3024 Greenville.  826-2026

Texas Tea House - 3402 Kings Rd.  526-9171.  Will Barnes - house band.  Can't say that I've danced on tables, but this was a place where you could.  I did stand on benches clapping and yelling.

Poor David's Pub - 2900 McKinney.  824-9891.  At the end of the 1970s.

Whiskey River - 5421 Greenville.  369-9221

Strictly TaBu - 4111 Lomo Alto.  526-9395.  Was never a jazz-scene hipster.

JoJo's - 10011 N. Central,  369-8972.  Too late night for me.  We always visited Phil's Delicatessen for late-night snacks.

TGI Friday's - 5500 Greenville  363-5353

Palladium - 6532 E. Northwest Hwy at Abrams.  Never was a paying customer, but worked security for Elvis impersonator, Johnny Mara, who knocked 'em dead in every performance.

Ole Top Rail - I like to say "Yee-haa"... from the comfort of my own home and not in a bar.  Went there once.

Lakewood Yacht Club
- 2009 Abrams. 824-1390.  I don't know why I haven't been there.

Mother Blues - 4014 Lemmon Ave, Oak Lawn Ave.  My high school friend saw a rock musician play here to a sparse crowd.  He called everyone he could to come down and listen to this guy.  Within 6 months, he was on the cover of Time Magazine as "the future of Rock and Roll," his name - Bruce Springstein. Never visited, now I know.  After high school I never had any money, including right up to now.

Baby Doe's Matchless Mine Company - 1878 Goat Hill off Harry Hines.  Hardest place to reach in Dallas.  Went for Happy Hour once.

J. Alfred Prufrock, Knox Street Pub - 3230 Knox. 526-9476

The Den - 2927 Maple, Stoneleigh Hotel.  742-7111

Greenville Ave Bar and Grill - 2821 Greenville.  823-6691

The Library - 3015 Oak Lawn, Melrose Hotel.  521-5151

The Quiet Man - 3120 Knox.  LA-6-9115

Sportatorium - The "Mecca" for lower middle class entertainment.  Never went.

Devil's Bowl - Looked through the fence, but never went in.

Le Mans le Mare Bar - "Men of the Sea," a green painted bar right across the street from Fair Park, where Dallas area scuba divers hung out.  Would give anything for a picture.

Oyster House - 108 N. Akard, Downtown.  When you say you've eaten at the "Jaded Palate Restaurant," you are describing the Oyster House.  Actually, have been there.  Too jaded for me.

Sol's Turf Bar - 1515 Commerce, Downtown.  Just looking though the open door, I realized I would never be going there.

Elm Street News Stand - Elm & Akard.  You always felt not very proud of yourself leaving this place.  Hate to say, I visited behind the curtain for the adult section in the back.

Zodiac Room at Neiman's - Took Anne Yarborough for lunch there once  I should have been opening the door, rather than as a patron.

Debonnaire Danceland - 2810 Samuel.  I worked with a girl who dreamed about marrying a truck driver.  She could have found him here.  Never went.  Country and Western music.

The Busy Bee Lounge - 1114 N. Industrial.  An old time striptease house that featured some of the best looking exotic dancers.  Visited twice to see Uncle Willie, MC and vaudville tap dancer.

Zoe's Saber Lounge - 4305 Elm.  214-823-0858.

Louann's (Ann Bovis) - 5211 Greenville.  EM-1-2688.
